Diagnostic Assessments

Most families start their journey with a question: Does my child have autism?

Friends, family, and teachers will all offer opinions and a quick internet search will cause you more worry than relief. The best answer to this question is a comprehensive assessment with a clinical psychologist who is trained and experienced in the assessment and diagnosis of autism. When receiving a diagnostic evaluation one should expect a wide-ranging data gathering experience which includes research validated testing measures, evaluations and reports from parents, teachers and other meaningful adults, observation and assessment with the child, review of all available records, and collaborative referrals to other medical professionals.

Most children with autism have at least one other medical or behavioral health condition which is contributing to their overall struggles. Identifying these conditions is the first step in creating a comprehensive treatment plan that is individualized for a child’s specific needs.

Testing and Assessment

Psychological testing can be used in a variety of ways to offer additional information and clarification towards ongoing treatment and progress. Examples might include:

  • Assessing for verbal and non-verbal learning disabilities that may be impacting a child’s ability to learn.
  • Providing thorough cognitive and academic assessment reports for adolescent students who are preparing to apply to college.
  • Determining if a co-occurring condition such as anxiety or other mood disorders may be complicating developmental progress for a child.
  • Assessing cognitive function to aid in individualized treatment planning.
  • Assessing for “Twice-Exceptional” individuals who are both advanced in some developmental/cognitive areas and developmentally behind in others.

Counseling and Therapy Services

Every parent will tell you: Autism impacts the whole family. It has an effect on siblings, families, holidays, birthday parties, travel plans, neighbors and everything else. Marriage and relationships too. Especially marriage and relationships.

Counseling can be an important part of supporting those in the family who need to find direction, fulfillment and support in their own lives- even as they care for a loved one with autism. Malama Pono provides counseling and therapy services to ensure all members of the family are supported and cared for.
